Survivor Stock Ticker: Episode Five

By John Powell – Binge News

They didn’t kill the chicken. Gata’s decision perhaps more than anything else really illustrates the difference between Old School ‘Better’ Survivor and the New Era. In the past, starving, depleted tribes didn’t hesitate to kill a pig, a chicken, a rat for their well-being.

In my interview with Anika Dhar for Global TV she said this: “I wasn’t anti killing the chicken but I’m aware that Sam and Andy are going to kill the chicken and they’re going to hand it to me to be to cut with my dull machete. I don’t have a cutting board. I’m going to get salmonella with all the blood on chicken, blood on my hands. I don’t have soap and water. Our fire is not strong enough…I’m thinking through all of this and I’m like: I do not know if we can accomplish this in the time that is needed and we CANNOT be the first tribe to kill a chicken and not cook it successfully. That was what was going through my head. I’m happy we didn’t kill it and I’m the one who suggested to them to do a negotiation. Sierra loved that idea and ran with it.”

As a cook myself, I get all that. Knowing all of this Probst should have pressed them on the issue. It wasn’t because they didn’t WANT to kill and eat the chicken. It is they didn’t KNOW or understand HOW to prepare it. Can you imagine going on Survivor and not having practiced how to at least fillet a fish? It ain’t that hard. Of course we are also talking about people who didn’t bother to learn how to make fire from whatever resources there are in the jungle or how to fish in the ocean.

This goes all back to the casting and type of people they bring onto the show. We don’t get many survivalists, wilderness guides, military, people anymore. People who not only have survival skills but are willing to learn survival skills to bring along to their experience on the island.

I mean, look at how many people don’t even bother to fish or hunt any more. They just eat coconuts and drink water, literally wasting away before our eyes meanwhile so many tribes had successful fishermen, Gervase ate rats, Michael killed a pig and Tom slew a great white shark with a freaking machete. I repeat…a FREAKING machete. There is so much more. Like how players used to engage in physical challenges against each other whether trying to knock each other off a platform or balancing on a spinning log. I still love Survivor and always will but it just isn’t the same anymore. The show and definitely host/producer Jeff Probst have lost their edge.

On with this week’s Survivor Stock Ticker:

Like Kishan last week she trusted all the wrong people and those people had grown to distrust her. She didn’t have her finger on the pulse of the tribe although by all accounts we didn’t see all that was going on at Gata as far as the tribal politics go. Anika goes more into that in my interview for Global TV.

She finally made a choice. She isn’t working the middle any more. With the merge coming up next episode Gata may be able to count on Rachel…or maybe not. At least they are three strong. More and more Sierra is looking like my pick to win it all. I just have this feeling based on the editing.

She didn’t hesitate to throw Tiyana under the bus hard to Gabe. She really has proved her worth to him sharing so much information. She could go far with him.

Her betrayal of Gabe became public knowledge. It is doubtful that anyone at Tuku trusts her any more. She could be a really easy merge boot.

She is all on her own now. Will Gata stick with her or will she be fed to the wolves as an easy out?

Who’s next to go?

Once that story of how she sold Gabe down the river circulates she could be toast.

You have to believe with Genevieve ready to throw Rome overboard that his days are numbered.

It is difficult to know where the cards will fall. Rachel has always been on the outs with the rest of Gata though.
