Survivor Stock Ticker: Episode Six

By John Powell – Binge News

In case you missed it (and you probably did) Vice aired its Survivor episode of its Darkside of Reality TV series, which in all honesty is just playing out a reality show primer and nothing more. The only, I repeat, the only interesting segment is in which it was revealed that Richard Hatch accused the producers of cheating. On the show even Kelly Wigglesworth admitted it happened so Hatch didn’t dream it up. Wigglesworth and Hatch agree that a producer walked by her dropping a protein bar for her to eat which would have amounted to a big advantage in the final phase of the game. Hatch accused production of not just giving her food on that occasion but during many other incidents as well. Hatch claimed that Mark Burnett would pay his taxes if he ever won the game.

Yup. That’s it. None of this should shock anyone in the sense that it is reality television. Nothing is ever as it appears. Here are some other Survivor tidbits you may not know about off the top of my head.

Apparently during the original season the cast was starving and basically pulled a mutiny. They demanded more rice or they were going to walk off the show. They eventually the cast were given more rice.

During Survivor: Africa the players were given regular IVs off camera to prevent dehydration. Also they had to correct the winnings after the show was over because they made a mistake. During the second-to-last immunity challenge the producers messed up. The challenge was trivia about the other players. The final question was: “Which female survivor does not have anything pierced, including her ears?”. The true answer was Kelly Goldsmith AND Lindsey Richter, however, the producers didn’t know that Lindsey Richter also met the criteria. Lex van den Berghe guessed Richter but Kim Johnson was given the win with her answer of Kelly. The producers awarded $100,000 to both runner-ups Lex van den Berghe and Tom Buchanan because of the mistake.

There are so many more Survivor spoilers but they are for another day. By the way, check my interview with Rome for Global TV. He makes a very curious allegation against Kyle.

On with this week’s Survivor Stock Ticker:

Was there ever a more predictable boot? Once people started comparing notes about how he was playing the game and how he couldn’t be trusted, he was a goner. Rome just wasn’t a balanced or nuanced player.

While he isn’t out of the woods yet he has found his footing in the game. He even sounds more confident at tribal council. Gata could be coming under fire though now that the big target in Rome is gone. It would be an eight versus four equation so the odds would be against Andy surviving. We will just see how things play out.

Sam hit the ground running at the Merge with so many people coming to him for advice and counsel but he may have exposed what a big threat he is going forwards.

I am not really sure why all of the amulet holders decided to come forward as they did. I would have been working to get the other two out if I could. Caroline and Andy agreeing to use the amulet on Teeny did not improve Teeny’s status in the game. She is even more of a social threat than ever before.

Who’s next to go?

I think there is far more to Rome’s story than he relayed to me. I would suspect that whatever he said that wasn’t aired about Caroline and Sue perhaps spurs the women to target the men, well, at least Kyle.

In the end, I even think that Sierra betrays him. She sees that Gata is in everyone else’s sights and makes that jump to either the women or a new alliance.
