The Dig coming to Netflix

John Preston’s novel The Dig is being made into a Netflix movie.

The movie will star Carey Mulligan (An Education, Wildlife), Ralph Fiennes (The White Crow, The Grand Budapest Hotel), Lily James (Rebecca, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again), Johnny Flynn (Emma, Beast), Ben Chaplin (Apple Tree Yard, Mad Dogs), Ken Stott (Café Society, The Hobbit) and Monica Dolan (Eye In The Sky, A Very English Scandal).

The 2007 novel detailed the discovery and excavation of a 1939 Anglo-Saxon ship at Sutton Hoo, Suffolk, England.  Preston was a nephew of one of the excavators.

Netflix describes the film as: “As WWII looms, a wealthy widow hires an amateur archaeologist to excavate the burial mounds on her estate. When they make a historic discovery, the echoes of Britain’s past resonate in the face of its uncertain future‎.”

The film is being produced in the UK for a 2020 release date.
