The Crown ending with season five, Harry Potter regular to be the last Queen Elizabeth II

The fifth reign will be the last.

Netflix has announced that the fifth season will be the last for The Crown.

Imelda Staunton, known for her portrayal of Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter films and Knotgrass in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil will take over the role of Queen Elizabeth II.

“I have loved watching The Crown from the very start. As an actor it was a joy to see how both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman brought something special and unique to Peter Morgan’s scripts. I am genuinely honoured to be joining such an exceptional creative team and to be taking The Crown to its conclusion,” said Staunton.

Series creator called Staunton “a fantastic successor”.

Alongside Claire Foy and Olivia Colman Dr. Who’s Matt Smith and Tobias Menzies have portrayed Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in the series.

With the show ending as it is, it is unlikely that it will reach the death of Princess Diana in 1997.

Season three of The Crown dropped on Netflix on November 17, 2019.
