The reason why Disney has stopped production on the Lizzie McGuire reboot may be based on one of its storylines.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, a leaked script detailed a storyline that was centered around sex and cheating.
Hilary Duff, who played the lead character in the original 2001 series, slammed Disney in the media asking that the show be moved to Hulu instead like Disney’s, Love, Simon. That series will premiere on Hulu instead of Disney+ because of the show’s focus on the lead character questioning, discovering their sexuality.
On Instagram, Duff posted her reaction to production being halted and Terri Minsky, the series creator and showrunner, leaving the production.
‘Was incredibly excited to launch ‘Lizzie’ on D+ and my passion remains! However, I feel a huge responsibility to honor the fans’ relationship with LIZZIE who, like me, grew up seeing themselves in her. I’d be doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30 year old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating. It’s important to me that just as her experience as a preteen / teenager navigating her life were authentic, her next chapters are equally as real and relatable,” she wrote.
There is still no word on what Disney will do with the series or where it will end up.
