In another blow to the movie industry, the much anticipated Wonder Woman 1984 is being released on HBO Max at no extra cost to subscribers on Christmas Day and in theatres which are safe to open.
There is a catch however. The film will only be on HBO Max for a month and then it will move to VOD services. It will open in theatres overseas on December 16th.
The pandemic forced the film’s premiere to be moved from June to August then October.
“We love our movie as we love our fans, so we truly hope that our film brings a little bit of joy and reprieve to all of you this holiday season,” said director Patty Jenkins.
“We appreciate how patient audiences have been and given the great anticipation around Wonder Woman 1984 we are grateful to be able to make this terrifically entertaining movie widely available in these challenging times,” said Toby Emmerich, Chairman, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.
In the film, Wonder Woman not only faces off against the underhanded businessman Maxwell Lord, played by Pedro Pascal from The Mandalorian but also her arch nemesis Cheetah played by Kristen Wiig.
Earlier this year, Warner Brothers released Christopher Nolan’s Tenet in theatres but in the end the $200 million film didn’t break even.
